FACULTY OF BIORESOURCES AND NATURAL RESOURCES USAGE

The Faculty of Bioresources and Natural Resources Usage (former the Ichthyology Faculty) was the first Russian higher education institution designed for the fishing industry and followed the establishment of the first such institute in Tokyo.

Departments:

  • Ichthyology and Ecology
  • Aquaculture
  • Ichthyopathology and Hydrobiology
  • Agricultural Production
  •  Zoological Engineering

Specialities:

  • Biological Resources and Nature Usage
  • Zoological Engineering
  • Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science
  • Agricultural Ecology
  • Agronomy

Enjoying the status of the first Russian fishery school, the Faculty is the leading scientific centre in Russia for the fishing industry. In 1994 it started training specialists for agriculture.

The conception of the faculty's development today: training specialists in natural resources usage on the basis of the latest achievements in science and practice of Russia and other countries.

The Department of Ichthyology and Ecology trains students in the series of courses connected with hydrocoles surrounding, their biology and effective usage of stocks, catch control, and environment protection.

The Department of Aquaculture undertakes training of specialists for reproduction of fish stocks in natural conditions, pond fish-farming, breeding and growing of marketable fish in various industrial systems - cages, basins, closed re-circulating water systems, cultivating, sea fish, molluscs, crayfish and plants; fish genetics and selection.

The Department of Ichthyopathology and Hydrobiology trains students in the field of water toxicology, fish diseases, hydrobiology, fish histology and physiology.

Graduates of the Faculty work in the following areas:

  • Fauna of oceans, seas and continental reservoirs;
  • Fish and invertebrate animal breeding in ponds, lakes, rearing ponds, sea plantations and industrial systems;
  • Fish diseases.

Investigations in this area are conducted on the following subjects:

  •  Biology of fish and its stocks, and regulating the catch;
  • Ecological monitoring of inland water bodies;
  • Controlled pasturable fish culture;
  • Development and use of computer technologies in the fisheries.

The Department of Agricultural Production trains specialists in the field of organization of production, storage, and processing of plants. The first level of studies finishes with a Bachelor's degree awarded in "Agronomy". The second stage allows obtaining a specialist diploma in "Agronomy". In 2002 the department started educating students in "Agricultural chemistry" and "Agricultural ecology". Students with a turn for scientific work can take Master's degree courses in agronomy, agricultural chemistry and soil science, horticulture and vegetable growing, plants protection.

The Department of Zoological Engineering is the youngest among the Faculty's departments. It was founded in 1999 for training specialists in live-stock-breeding.

In 1999 the Faculty started training in "Ecology and Natural Resources Usage". This new perspective area attracted attention of students at once. The graduates with a Bachelor's degree awarded will deal with nature protection and natural resources management.

The Faculty of Bioresources and Natural Resources Usage has adequate facilities and laboratories to carry out research in hydroecology, microbiology, histology, and agrophysics. There are also experimental installations for rearing fish in industrial conditions, agricultural station, as well as ichthyological and hydrobiological museums.

For further studies the faculty offers post-graduate and doctorate courses.

In order to increase the level of training, the faculty successfully co-operates with educational entities in Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Byelorussia, etc.
